In the last few months, we have welcomed many new students at Sunshine Home. In the classroom, the children have been showing independent self-care. They have been washing their hands on their own, lifting their own pants, and completing many tasks by themselves. Some of the older children have even learned to help those younger ones that might need additional assistance. The children have also been learning and following the rules. For example, they are walking in the classroom, using their indoor voices and sitting nicely.

Additionally, children have also learned to respect others. They have learned to listen to others, look them in the eye when they speak, apologize when necessary, give gentle hugs and show friendliness. We have also encouraged the children to express their emotions in more ways and we’ve encouraged the children to share their emotions with their peers!

Language is an important aspect of education. Through language, our students can communicate with us, as well as with one another. Communication can range from necessities, such as going to the bathroom, to interests, such as singing. In addition to the words we teach our students each theme, we also want to focus on everyday language so that they are able to voice their thoughts. By putting emphasis on greetings and basic interactions, we help improve our children’s social capabilities and help them develop a healthy outlook on social interaction. As children learn to talk to one another, they also learn the differences between positive social behavior and negative social behavior.

The IC class is full of students who have a wide variety of interests and whose minds are full of ideas. Learning is not just about being able to say, “I can do it!” For these intelligent young children, they are also constantly thinking of ways to integrate what they learn in class into their everyday lives. We encourage them to share their ideas and interests with us. Hearing children speak about their thoughts is a wonderful and fascinating experience. Many times they are voicing perspectives we have not even considered! During this process, their language and critical thinking skills will improve because they are taking the time to think about the topic they want to discuss.

To help children express their thoughts, our class circle time teaches unit vocabulary in conjunction with daily use vocabulary. We continue to learn about body parts to familiarize students with ways to express physical feelings. For example, “my head hurts” or “my nose is itchy.” We will also continue to learn about emotions like “happy”, “sad”, or “sleepy.” This helps students verbalize their thoughts in a productive manner.

Additionally, we encourage group activities and friendship.

Helping children foster friendships will help make school more exciting because their dear friends are attending school with them! This also promotes positive interactions because children will feel safer and will be more willing to speak their mind. During class time, we play games where children can work together to complete the activity. Cooperation is a skill that can be nurtured and improved upon over time. We hope to see our young Cheetahs students grow into confident learners!
