What to do when children are distracted in class

Often, children become distracted in class and have a difficult time concentrating. Parents know that this affects their child’s education, so they want to know what they can do to help They often ask teachers for solutions to this problem.

A child’s ability to concentrate is dependent upon their age and brain development.  Generally speaking, a child who is two years old has an average concentration time of 6 minutes. A child who is 4 years old has an average concentration time of 14 minutes. A child who is age 5 years old has an average concentration time of 25 minutes.

As a child develops and grows older they will gradually increase their attention span. When thinking about a child’s concentration and ability to focus, it is best to take into consideration the child’s age, rather than the subjective feelings of the parents.

However, if a child's attention span is significantly lower than the normal level for his or her age, here are some great tips:

1.Give the child an established task at home, such as sitting at the table to eat a meal for 20 minutes. Monitor the child throughout the meal so that they are strictly concentrating on eating only. If the child's attention starts to wander, verbally remind him or her. After the task is completed, give the child the appropriate incentives or rewards.

2.Many children love when their parents read them stories. Ask the child to sit and make sure that he or she is concentrating when the story begins. After a few minutes, excitedly ask the child what he or she thinks will happen next. Continue doing this throughout the story. It helps the child concentrate on the content of the story, while also helping to improve their speaking.

Lack of concentration should not be a huge concern in young children. It is important to remember that concentration and focus are just abilities that develop with a child’s age.
